Cloud Next Google on Wednesday rolled out Firebase Studio, a product billed as “a cloud-based agentic development environment” – i.e., a coding space based in a browser and involving AI assistance for developers to build and prototype applications without every last line of code themselves.

Technology firms are bandying the phrase “agentic AI” about now, and it is tempting to propose, à la Arthur C. Clarke, that advanced enough automated uses of AI are unrecognizable from agentic AI.

A Google spokesperson offered the following definition: “That means using agents to complete tasks throughout the software development lifecycle. Also, Firebase Studio can be used to build apps that have native functionality and control flow driven by generative AI.”

That accords with other definitions of the term we’ve seen. Nvidia’s definition is: “Agentic AI uses sophisticated reasoning and iterative planning to autonomously solve complex, multi-step problems.”
